Lock replacement and rekeying

Moved into a new home, lost a set of keys, or had a break-in attempt? You need the old keys to stop working — either by rekeying the lock you have or by replacing it. Request a verified locksmith in the Vula24 app.

Lock replacement across Gauteng and the Western Cape

Lock replacement services in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Sandton and surrounding areas — plus the full city list below.

Moved into a townhouse in Centurion, lost keys in Johannesburg, or had a break-in attempt in Cape Town? The question is the same everywhere: do you rekey the lock you have, or replace it? This page explains the difference so you can ask the locksmith for the right job. Need a fault fixed rather than new keys? See lock repair.

“Lock replacement” and “Lock upgrade” are services that verified locksmiths can offer in the Vula24 app. Locksmiths set their own prices; the app shows the full price, including the Vula24 platform fee, before you confirm.

  • Rekey or replace after moving house, lost keys or a break-in
  • Cylinder, mortice and rim locks; security-gate locks where the locksmith can supply the part
  • Ask for all doors on one key (keyed alike) where the locks allow

Rekey or replace — what is the difference?

Rekeying keeps the lock but changes its internal pins so that a new key works and the old keys do not. It suits cylinder locks that are in good condition, and usually costs less in parts because the lock body stays on the door.

Replacing means fitting a new lock or a new cylinder. It is the better choice when the lock was forced or damaged, is worn out, cannot be rekeyed, or when you want better security. On doors with euro-profile cylinder locks, often only the cylinder needs to be swapped — not the whole lock.

Older 2- and 3-lever mortice locks are common on South African doors. They offer relatively low security and are often replaced rather than rekeyed — ask the locksmith what they recommend for your door.

When should you change your locks?

  • You have moved into a house, flat or complex unit and do not know who still has keys
  • Keys were lost or stolen — especially together with something showing your address
  • There was a break-in or attempted break-in and a lock was forced
  • A tenant, contractor or former staff member did not return their keys
  • The lock is stiff, the key keeps snapping, or the lock no longer latches properly

Security gates, outside gates and padlocks

Locks on burglar-bar and trellis-type security gates face weather and, at the coast, salt-air corrosion. Some security-gate brands use proprietary locks that need the manufacturer’s parts or an authorised installer. Tell the locksmith the gate brand, if you know it, so they can check whether they can supply the part.

Seized or lost-key padlocks are a separate, quicker job — choose “Padlock removal” in the app.

What to tell the locksmith

A clear request helps the locksmith bring the right parts and gives you a more accurate price:

  • How many doors or gates, and which ones (front, back, garage, security gate)
  • The type of each lock if you know it — photos of the lock and the edge of the door help if the locksmith asks for them
  • Whether you want to rekey, replace or upgrade — or want the locksmith’s advice
  • Whether you want one key to open all the doors (keyed alike)
  • Access notes: complex gate code, parking and whether someone will be home

What affects the price

The number of locks, whether they are rekeyed or replaced, the type and security grade of any new hardware, travel and the time of day all affect the price. Locksmiths on Vula24 set their own prices, and the app shows the full price before you confirm. If the locksmith finds on site that extra hardware is needed, agree on it before any work starts.

Replacing locks on many doors?

Offices, warehouses, schools and complexes that need many locks changed — or everything on one common key or a master key — usually need a site inspection and a written quote first. See commercial locksmith help and our guide to master key systems.

Frequently asked questions

I lost my house keys. How do I replace them?

If you still have a spare and you are sure the lost keys cannot be linked to your address, you can simply have copies cut from the spare. If the keys were stolen, lost with something showing your address, or you have no spare, have the outside locks rekeyed or replaced so the lost keys stop working — a locksmith cuts new keys at the same time. If you are locked out as well, request a house lockout first.

Is rekeying cheaper than replacing a lock?

Usually, because the lock body stays on the door and only the pins and keys change. It is only possible if the lock is in good condition and is a type that can be rekeyed. Replacing a single cylinder is often a middle option on doors with euro-profile cylinders.

Should I change the locks after moving into a new house?

It is a good idea. You rarely know how many copies of the old keys exist or who has them. Rekeying or replacing the outside door locks means only your keys work.

Can one key open all my doors?

Often, yes. If the locks use compatible cylinders, a locksmith can key them alike so one key opens every door. Mixed lock types may need some cylinders replaced first. See our guide to master key systems and keyed-alike locks.

Will the locksmith ask for proof that I live there?

A legitimate locksmith may ask for ID and something that links you to the property, such as a lease or utility bill, before changing locks. That protects you as well.

Can I book lock replacement in the Vula24 app?

Yes. Choose “Lock replacement” or “Lock upgrade” in the Vula24 app. The app matches you with the nearest verified locksmith who is online and offers that service, and shows the full price before you confirm.
