Locksmith Questions — Answered
Everything you need to know about finding a trusted locksmith in South Africa, what to do when locked out, and how Vula24 works.
When Locked Out
I locked my keys inside my car. What should I do?
Stay calm. Download the Vula24 app, select car lockout, confirm your location and the app matches you with the nearest verified locksmith who is online and offers that service. You will see their exact price before confirming and track them live on the map.
I am locked out of my house. What should I do?
Download the Vula24 app and select house lockout. The app matches you with the nearest verified locksmith who is online and offers that service. You see the full price before confirming and can track them live.
My child is locked inside my car. Who do I call?
This is an emergency. Call 10111 immediately. Then request a locksmith through the Vula24 app and say that a child is inside.
I am locked out at 2am. Is there anyone available?
The Vula24 app accepts requests at any hour, including nights, weekends and public holidays. Whether a locksmith is available depends on which verified locksmiths are online near you. If none are, the app tells you and you can WhatsApp the Vula24 team.
I lost my car keys. Can a locksmith make a new one?
Often, yes. Request lost car key replacement in the Vula24 app and give the make, model and year. Many modern keys have a transponder chip or remote that must be programmed to the car, and not every locksmith can do every vehicle, so check before you confirm. Expect to be asked for proof that the car is yours, such as your ID and registration papers. See vula24.co.za/services/lost-car-key.
Can I get spare keys cut through Vula24?
House and car key duplication are services locksmiths can list on Vula24. The app shows whether a locksmith near you offers it. Car keys with a chip may need programming as well as cutting. Vula24 has no key shops — for one ordinary copy, a walk-in key cutter may be simpler. See vula24.co.za/services/key-duplication.
Is Vula24 a 24-hour locksmith?
Vula24 is not a locksmith company. The Vula24 app takes requests 24 hours a day, every day, including public holidays, but a locksmith is not guaranteed: whether someone accepts depends on which independent locksmiths are online near you at the time. If nobody is available, the app tells you and you can WhatsApp the Vula24 team.
My key broke inside the lock. What now?
Do not try to remove it yourself as this can push it deeper. Download Vula24 and select broken key extraction. A professional locksmith will remove it safely.
Pricing
How much does a locksmith cost in South Africa?
Locksmith prices vary depending on the service, location, and time of day. With Vula24, locksmiths set their own prices and you see the full price — including the Vula24 platform fee — before confirming your booking.
Why are locksmiths so expensive?
Locksmiths invest in specialised tools, training, and certification. Emergency callouts at night also command higher rates. Vula24 shows you the price upfront so you can make an informed decision.
Is there a call out fee?
Some locksmiths charge a call out fee. On Vula24 the full price including any call out fee is shown before you confirm your booking.
What should a locksmith charge?
Each locksmith sets their own rates. With Vula24 you see the exact price before confirming. If you feel it is too high you can cancel before confirming at no charge.
Trust and Safety
How do I know if a locksmith is legitimate?
Use Vula24. Every locksmith on the platform is verified before they can accept jobs. Once matched, the app shows your locksmith’s name, photo, vehicle and rating before they arrive.
How do I avoid locksmith scams?
Never hire a locksmith who cannot give you a price upfront. Avoid cash-only businesses. On Vula24, every locksmith is verified before they can accept jobs, and you see the full price before you confirm.
Who is the best locksmith in Johannesburg?
Vula24 does not rank locksmiths. When you book in the app, you are matched with the nearest verified locksmith who is online and offers your service, and you see their rating and the full price before you confirm.
Can you recommend a trusted locksmith near me?
Download the Vula24 app. We connect you with verified, rated locksmiths in your area across Gauteng and Western Cape.
Are locksmiths on Google Maps trustworthy?
Not always. Anyone can create a Google listing with fake reviews. Every Vula24 locksmith submits an ID document, a selfie holding their ID and proof of address, and is reviewed by the Vula24 team before they can accept jobs.
